Ask a Baoji titanium supplier what slows down or derails an overseas order,
and price isn't the first answer. The most common issue is simpler and more
avoidable: **buyers send a request that isn't specific enough to quote
accurately.** The supplier either has to send several rounds of clarifying
questions (slowing everything down) or guesses at the missing details — and
guessing is where mismatched shipments happen.

Here's what a supplier actually needs to give you an accurate, fast quote.

## The two fields buyers most often leave vague

**Tolerance.** "Standard tolerance" isn't a spec — it varies by mill and by
what "standard" means to a given factory. State the actual tolerance you
need (e.g., ±0.05mm), or the standard you're quoting against (ASTM B348 has
defined tolerance classes).

**Chemical composition requirements.** Naming the grade (Gr5 / Ti-6Al-4V)
tells a supplier the target alloy, but if you have tighter-than-standard
requirements on specific elements (oxygen content for certain fatigue-
sensitive applications, for example), that needs to be stated explicitly.
"Gr5" alone assumes standard composition limits — if your application needs
something tighter, say so up front.

## A useful mental model: tolerance is a hardware question, not a skill question

A common misconception is that tight dimensional tolerance comes down to an
experienced machinist or an especially careful factory. In practice,
tolerance capability is largely determined by **the rolling mill itself** —
its precision, condition, and calibration — not by how many years the
operators have been doing the job. When evaluating a supplier's ability to
hit a tight tolerance, the more useful question is "what mill do you run,
and what tolerance is it rated for," not "how experienced is your team."

This matters for RFQs too: if your tolerance requirement is tight, it's
worth asking directly whether the supplier's equipment supports it before
you're deep into a quote — rather than finding out after material arrives
out of spec.

## Minimum information for a quotable RFQ

- **Grade** (e.g. Gr5 / Ti-6Al-4V) and the standard it should meet (ASTM /
  AMS)
- **Form and dimensions** — diameter, length, and tolerance
- **Quantity**, and whether you need it from stock or can accept a
  made-to-order lead time (in-stock material can ship in quantities as
  small as 1kg from some suppliers; custom/non-standard specs typically
  carry a minimum order — ask what applies to your spec)
- **Application** — this isn't just informational. It tells the supplier
  what certification you're likely to need (see below), and whether your
  spec falls into a category that requires additional documentation
- **Certification requirements** — if you need third-party test reports
  (SGS or equivalent), say so in the RFQ rather than after the quote

## Why this is worth doing properly

A vague RFQ doesn't just slow down your quote — it shifts risk onto you.
When a supplier has to guess at tolerance or composition, the material you
receive may be correct by their interpretation and still wrong for your
application. A specific, complete RFQ is the cheapest form of quality
control available to a buyer, and it costs nothing but a few extra minutes
before you send it.
